Resideo has officially announced the new First Alert Smart Smoke & Carbon Monoxide (CO) Alarm, which works within the Google Home app and is compatible with Nest Protect devices.
And that’s good news if you’re monitoring your house with Nest Protects – which, of course, have limited lives – because Google has revealed it isn’t making any more.
Google has posted a blog stating that it is no longer manufacturing new Nest Protect Smoke & CO alarms but existing devices will “continue to receive security updates and continue to work as they always have through their expiration dates.”
For those already invested in Nest Protect then, the new First Alert Smart Smoke & CO Alarm looks like the prefect solution if you need to add more or replace devices.
The two-in-one alarm can connect to Nest Protect units, meaning if one alarm goes off, all compatible alarms will sound, whether you’re home or away. Presumably they use Google’s Weave tech, which is essentially rebadged Thread to connect to each other.
You can also silence alarms and get critical safety alerts in both the First Alert and Google Home apps, making it easier to manage home safety from anywhere.
The new First Alert alarm boasts the brand’s Precision Detection sensors, to account for modern home designs where open spaces and synthetic materials can cause fires to spread faster and burn hotter.
The alarm also provides voice alerts tell you what and where the issue is, and smartphone notifications keep you informed when away and even non-smart First Alert alarms can trigger alerts via the app.
The First Alert Smart Smoke & CO Alarm will be available in both battery and hardwired versions in the coming months, costing $129.99, which is $20 less than the Nest Protect’s full price.
Google also announced that it isn’t making Nest x Yale smart locks any more either but has assured us that it is still in the hardware game with “more helpful home devices in the coming months” expected.
